The reading room is full before lunch. Some visitors have books open; others are charging a phone, finishing an application or simply waiting somewhere warm.
This is not evidence that the library has lost its purpose. It is evidence that its purpose was always larger than the shelves.
A good public room asks little of the people who enter it. That generosity now feels both old-fashioned and urgently contemporary.
