The vacant units did not all become shops again. Some became workshops, clinics, kitchens, classrooms and offices with windows at street level.
What returned was not the old high street but a more mixed version of it—less dependent on a single kind of customer and more useful across the day.
The lesson is architectural as much as economic: flexible buildings make room for flexible lives.
